HMAT A55 Kyarra 

 

2nd Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, 8th Reinforcements, embarked from Brisbane, Queensland on board HMAT A55 Kyarra on 16 August 1915.

The HMAT A55 Kyarra weighed 6,953 tons with an average cruise speed of 14 knots or 25.92 kmph. It was owned by the AUSN Co Ltd, London, and manned by Australia officers and crew. The Kyarra was leased by the Commonwealth until 4 January 1918. The Kyarra was torpedoed and sunk by a submarine in the English Channel, 26 May 1918.

 

The ensuing individual soldier's embarkation information contains the following details:

The last address as a civilian;

Captain Simon Bernard BOLAND, a 39 year old Clerk from QR Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 13 February 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 21 January 1916.

1160 Private William ELLIOTT, a 22 year old Farmer from Empireville, New South Wales. He enlisted on 15 February 1915; and subsequently Died of Wounds, 17 July 1918.

 

1161 Private Archibald Duncan FINDLAY, a 26 year old Miner from Ruby Vale, Queensland. He enlisted on 16 February 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 13 March 1919.

2nd Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, 9th Reinforcements, embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A33 Ayrshire 1 September 1915.

The HMAT A33 Ayrshire weighed 7,763 tons with an average cruise speed of 13 knots or 24.07 kmph. It was owned by the The Scottish Shire Line Ltd, London, and leased by the Commonwealth until 9 January 1918.

6th Light Horse Regiment, War Diary Account.

 

The following is a transcription of the Account from the War Diary of the 6th Light Horse Regiment detailing its role at the First Battle of Gaza, Palestine, 26 to 27 March 1917.

 

Shunnar, 25 March 1917

Regiment marched out from Shunnar at 0230 and bivouacked at Deir el Belah 1000. Strength marching out 22 Officers, 426 Other Ranks and 519 horses.


Gaza, 26 March 1917

Marched out from Belah to Gaza 0300 with Brigade. 2 Squadrons were in reserve to 5th and 7th Light Horse Regiments north east of Gaza. 3 Troops under Major Cross and 1 Troop with Lieutenant Hardy were detailed to delay enemy reinforcements arriving by beach route. 1 Troops cleared Beit Hanun at 1230. "A" and "B" Squadrons under Major White formed an outpost line at eastern sandhills to beach, a distance of about 4 miles, protecting Brigade from rear.


Deir el Belah 27 March 1917

Left Gaza 2400 and marched in to Belah arriving there 0730 on 27 March 1917, watered and rode out to bivouac about 1 mile from old bivouac, remained here all day and again watered in bivouac for night about 1 mile away in good feed country. No casualties.

HMAT A69 Warilda

 

2nd Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, 10th Reinforcements, embarked from Brisbane, Queensland on board HMAT A69 Warilda 5 October 1915.

The HMAT A69 Warilda weighed 7,713 tons with an average cruise speed of 16 knots or 29.63 kmph. It was owned by the Adelaide SS Co Ltd, Adelaide, and manned by Australian officers and mainly by Australian crews. The Warilda was torpedoed and sunk by a submarine in the English Channel, 3 August 1918.

2nd Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, 11th Reinforcements, embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A47 Mashobra 4 October 1915.

The HMAT A47 Mashobra weighed 8,174 tons with an average cruise speed of 12.5 knots or 23.15 kmph. It was owned by the British India SN Co Ltd, London, and leased by the Commonwealth until 21 December 1916. The Mashobra was torpedoed and sunk in the Mediterranean, 15 April 1917.

1724 Private Clarence Richmond OLSEN, an 18 year old Mechanic from Chelmer via Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 23 August 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 2 January 1919.

1722 Private Robert John OWEN, a 23 year old Labourer from Painters Creek via Nambour, Queensland. He enlisted on 29 August 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 17 June 1918.

1723 Private Ramsay OWENS, a 19 year old Labourer from Rockhampton, Queensland. He enlisted on 21 August 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 15 May 1919.

 

1487 Private Herbert PAINTON, a 20 year old Carpenter from Maryborough, Queensland. He enlisted on 1 September 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 26 January 1919.

1725 Private Howard Ephriam PARKER, a 28 year old Teamster from Mt Crosby, Queensland. He enlisted on 17 August 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 13 March 1919.

1458 Private Vere Reginald PENNEFATHER, a 25 year old Surveyor from Casino, New South Wales. He enlisted on 10 July 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 13 March 1919.

1459 Private Robert Henry PERRETT, a 32 year old Farmer from Hinders, Queensland. He enlisted on 26 July 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 31 May 1919.

1460 Acting Corporal John Daniel PITTS, a 28 year old Farmer from Cooroy, Queensland. He enlisted on 5 July 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 13 April 1919.

1726 Private Arthur George ROBERTSON, a 25 year old Blacksmith from Milton, Queensland. He enlisted on 17 August 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 13 March 1919.
