Carew Reynell Diary - Passed the tropic of Capricorn at midnight last night. Very steamy and hot and quite still.Got 6 horses from No. 2 Hold up on deck and keeping all the open spaces under the hatchways filled.
The mare, No. 16318 about the same except that temperature is down to 104.2 and has remained so all day. Am more hopeful of recovery.
The cleanliness in the holds has entirely got rid of the smell of ammonia in all, except the aft end of No. 2 Hold. 6 now on deck there should be considerable improvement there tomorrow however.
Fortunately the Chief Officer - Mr Cartwright - is as keen as we are to land all the horses and no trouble is too much for him. The excellent feeding and comfort on board has put all hands in the very best of spirits. They work most perseveringly at the stables and discipline is excellent. They really are a fine lot of men. If the Officers only had a proper training and the NCOs done a months school, what a Regiment it would be - a determined hard faced set with plenty 'horse sense' - they would do well.
