HMAT A38 Ulysses

 

1 - 4 Light Horse Signal Troop, AIF, 8th Reinforcement, embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A38 Ulysses 19 December 1917.

The HMAT A38 Ulysses weighed 14,499 tons with an average cruise speed of 14 knots or 25.92 kmph. It was owned by the China Mutual SN Co, London, and leased by the Commonwealth until 15 August 1917.

The ensuing individual soldier's embarkation information contains the following details:

Rank on embarkation;

Full name of the soldier

Declared age of the soldier;

The last occupation held;

The last address as a civilian;

Enlistment Date; and,

Fate.

After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Signal Squadron; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 3 July 1919.

 

20823 Sapper Clive COLLINS, a 26 year old Engine driver from Exeter, New South Wales. He enlisted on 25 May 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Signal Squadron; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 3 July 1919.

 

20826 Sapper Patrick Joseph KIELY, a 21 year old Postal worker from Cairns, Queensland. He enlisted on 12 April 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 4th Light Horse Signal Troop; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 28 June 1919.

 

20837 Sapper Lawrence Sydney McCONNOLL, a 22 year old Postal worker from Richmond, Victoria. He enlisted on 4 January 1915. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Signal Squadron; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 5 March 1919.

20828 Sapper James McCRACKEN, a 22 year old Station hand from Sydney, New South Wales. He enlisted on 19 June 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Signal Squadron; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 9 July 1919.

20827 Sapper Donald Mylan McDONALD, a 21 year old Traveller from Catti via Windsor, New South Wales. He enlisted on 17 May 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Signal Troop; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 16 May 1919.

 

20829 Sapper James O'GRADY, a 19 year old Clerk from Sydney, New South Wales. He enlisted on 11 May 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Signal Squadron; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 28 January 1919.

 

20834 Sapper Herbert PACINI, a 26 year old Clerk from Burnley, Victoria. He enlisted on 6 September 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 4th Light Horse Signal Troop; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 2 August 1919.

 

20830 Sapper Herbert Edward RUSK, a 26 year old Clerk from Port Wakefield, South Australia. He enlisted on 5 April 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 3rd Light Horse Brigade Headquarters; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 10 July 1919.

 

20831 Sapper Leslie Emanuel SOLOMONS, a 22 year old Tobacconist from Adelaide, South Australia. He enlisted on 25 September 1916. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the AIF Headquarters; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 2 August 1919.

20832 Sapper Alfred STORES, a 19 year old Telegraphist from Katoomba, New South Wales. He enlisted on 12 May 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Signal Squadron; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 15 May 1919.

 

20833 Sapper Reuben Edward TAYLOR, a 20 year old Electricial mechanic from Oatley, New South Wales. He enlisted on 25 April 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 2nd Light Horse Signal Squadron; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 12 April 1919.

SS Port Lyttelton

 

1 - 4 Light Horse Signal Troop, AIF, 9th Reinforcement, embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board SS Port Lyttleton 24 June 1918.

The SS Port Lyttelton [sometimes referred to as SS Port Lydelton in Australian sources] was formerly the SS Niwaru but requisitioned in 1916 as a troop ship and renamed to SS Port Lyttelton. The ship weighed 6,444 tons with an average cruise speed of 12 knots or 22.22 kmph. It was owned by the Commonwealth & Dominion Line, London. 

The ensuing individual soldier's embarkation information contains the following details:

21360 Sapper Ernest Joseph BUCKLEY, a 19 year old Engineer from Gladesville, New South Wales. He enlisted on 25 October 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Squadron, Australian Flying Corps; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 4 March 1919.

 

21361 Acting Corporal William Charles CALE, a 28 year old Clerk from Canterbury, Victoria. He enlisted on 16 July 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 3rd Light Horse Signal Troop; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 26 December 1918.

21362 Sapper Arthur Stafford CRANE, a 19 year old Clerk from Mosman, New South Wales. He enlisted on 12 July 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 2nd Light Horse Signal Squadron; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 18 February 1919.

 

21363 Acting Corporal Paul Frith DUNBAN, a 21 year old Clerk from Bondi, New South Wales. He enlisted on 3 April 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Signal Squadron; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 3 July 1919.

 

21365 Sapper Edward Robert Henry GLENNY, a 43 year old Labourer from Kensington, New South Wales. He enlisted on 5 November 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Signal Squadron; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 16 May 1919.

 

21366 Sapper John HARRISON, an 18 year old Student from Croydon, New South Wales. He enlisted on 24 May 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 2nd Light Horse Signal Squadron; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 1 March 1919.

 

21372 Sapper Leslie Fletcher LOWTHEN, a 21 year old Telegraph mechanic from Clayfield, Queensland. He enlisted on 2 October 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 4th Light Horse Signal Troop; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 20 July 1919.

 

21367 Sapper Norman Edward MASON, an 18 year old Wireless student from Windsor, Victoria. He enlisted on 11 July 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 4th Light Horse Signal Troop; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 26 July 1919.

 

21369 Sapper Albert Stanley RUTLEDGE, a 19 year old Engineer from Footscray, Victoria. He enlisted on 24 May 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 2nd Light Horse Signal Squadron; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 26 July 1919.

 

21370 Sapper Albert Henry STANTON, a 19 year old Telegraphist from Oakleigh, Victoria. He enlisted on 25 June 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 2nd Light Horse Signal Squadron; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 26 July 1919.

 

21371 Sapper Bertie Lisle THOMAS, an 18 year old Messenger from Mile End, South Australia. He enlisted on 27 July 1917. The SS Port Lyttelton [sometimes referred to as SS Port Lydelton in Australian sources] was formerly the SS Niwaru but requisitioned in 1916 as a troop ship and renamed to SS Port Lyttelton. The ship weighed 6,444 tons with an average cruise speed of 12 knots or 22.22 kmph. It was owned by the Commonwealth & Dominion Line, London.

After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Squadron, Australian Flying Corps; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 4 March 1919.

 

21361 Acting Corporal William Charles CALE, a 28 year old Clerk from Canterbury, Victoria. He enlisted on 16 July 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 3rd Light Horse Signal Troop; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 26 December 1918.

21362 Sapper Arthur Stafford CRANE, a 19 year old Clerk from Mosman, New South Wales. He enlisted on 12 July 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 2nd Light Horse Signal Squadron; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 18 February 1919.

 

21363 Acting Corporal Paul Frith DUNBAN, a 21 year old Clerk from Bondi, New South Wales. He enlisted on 3 April 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Signal Squadron; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 3 July 1919.

 

21365 Sapper Edward Robert Henry GLENNY, a 43 year old Labourer from Kensington, New South Wales. He enlisted on 5 November 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Signal Squadron; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 16 May 1919.

 

21366 Sapper John HARRISON, an 18 year old Student from Croydon, New South Wales. He enlisted on 24 May 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 2nd Light Horse Signal Squadron; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 1 March 1919.

 

21372 Sapper Leslie Fletcher LOWTHEN, a 21 year old Telegraph mechanic from Clayfield, Queensland. He enlisted on 2 October 1917. 21371 Sapper Bertie Lisle THOMAS, an 18 year old Messenger from Mile End, South Australia. He enlisted on 27 July 1917. The SS Port Darwin was built in 1918 and weighed 8,179 tons with an average cruise speed of 16 knots or 29.63 kmph. It was owned by the Commonwealth & Dominion Line, and manned by Australian officers and mainly by Australian crews. The Port Darwin was scrapped in 1948.
