HMAT A26 Armadale

 

8th Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, 2nd Reinforcement, embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board HMAT A26 Armadale on 12 February 1915.

The HMAT A26 Armadale weighed 6,153 tons with an average cruise speed of 11 knots or 20.37 kmph. It was owned by the Australind SS Co, London, and leased by the Commonwealth until 7 June 1917. The Armadale was torpedoed and sunk by a submarine off coast of Ireland, 27 June 1917.

The ensuing individual soldier's embarkation information contains the following details:

Full name of the soldier

Declared age of the soldier;

The last occupation held;

The last address as a civilian;

Enlistment Date; and,

Fate.

683 Private Thomas John BROWN, a 39 year old Labourer from Redfern, New South Wales. He enlisted on 5 November 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 16 January 1919.

684 Private Frederick BUCKINGHAM, a 21 year old Farmer from Koonwarra, Victoria. He enlisted on 1 October 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 12 July 1918.

 

686 Private James Pullar CAMERON, a 23 year old Engine driver from Orbost, Victoria. He enlisted on 11 September 1914; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 7 August 1915.

687 Private William CAMPBELL, a 19 year old Labourer from Nyang, Victoria. He enlisted on 25 September 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 8 October 1915.

685 Private Douglas CARMICHAEL, a 23 year old Bank Clerk from West Greta, Victoria. He enlisted on 15 September 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 9 February 1919.

688 Private Charles Norton CLARK, a 26 year old Labourer from Heidelberg, Victoria. He enlisted on 28 September 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 7 December 1918.

689 Private Walter COMBS, a 41 year old Labourer from Corack West, Victoria. He enlisted on 1 October 1914; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 7 August 1915.

 

694 Private Percy George DEWHURST, a 29 year old Station Overseer from Inglewood, Victoria. He enlisted on 5 November 1914; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 7 August 1915.

695 Private Frederick James DOWNING, a 22 year old Groom from Tumut, New South Wales. He enlisted on 1 October 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 11 March 1916.

690 Private Alfred DRISCOLL, a 32 year old Labourer from Paddington, New South Wales. He enlisted on 21 October 1914; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 7 August 1915.

693 Private Thomas Alfred DUDDERIDGE, a 20 year old Labourer from Maffra, Victoria. He enlisted on 1 October 1914; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 7 August 1915.

HMAT A66 Uganda

 

8th Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, 6th Reinforcement, embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board HMAT A66 Uganda 21 June 1915.

The HMAT A66 Uganda weighed 5,431 tons with an average cruise speed of 10 knots or 18.52 kmph. It was owned by the British India SN Co Ltd, London, and leased by the Commonwealth until 4 December 1916. The Uganda was torpedoed and sunk by a submarine in Mediterranean, 27 May 1918.
