"At a mile distant their thousand hooves were stuttering thunder, coming at a rate that frightened a man - they were an awe inspiring sight, galloping through the red haze - knee to knee and horse to horse - the dying sun glinting on bayonet points..." Trooper Ion Idriess

Western Australian Militia

Albany Defence Rifles

The following is an extract from the book written in 1962 by George F. Wieck called The Volunteer Movement in Western Australia 1861-1903, pp. 49 - 50:

Albany Defence Rifles
Only five weeks or so had elapsed after the disbandment of the Albany Rifle Volunteers when the Governor gave approval to raise a new corps designated the "Albany Defence Rifles", with an Establishment of 80 all ranks. The Gazette (dated 6 May 1885) also notified the appointment of Dr C. Rogers as Captain Commanding.

In 1885 the strength of the corps was 73 all ranks but wastage was rapid, the total in 1887 being only 58. Evidently there were difficulties as regards officers for towards the end of 1887 Captain LV de Hamel (3rd Volunteer Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers) was appointed to act in temporary command. Changes were contemplated.

Captain LV de Hamel was appointed to command the Plantagenet Rifles (non-existent at that time) as from 14 March 1888. Meanwhile, members of the Albany Defence Riffles had been ordered to return their rifles and equipment to store.

Government Gazette dated 2 May 1888 decreed that "the Albany Defence Rifles” would henceforth bear the name of the Plantagenet Rifles, the former being hereby disbanded". The existing corps being disbanded and its name changed in the same breath!

An extraordinary way to effect the change. For all practical purposes the Albany Defence Rifles ceased to exist on 14 March 1888. Reasons for the change are not recorded.

Officers of the Albany Defence Rifles

Captain C Rogers, 6 May 1888

Lieutenant J Moir, 19 January 1886

The following is an extract from the book written in 1962 by George F. Wieck called The Volunteer Movement in Western Australia 1861-1903, p. 50:

No. 1 Battery, Field Artillery
This corps was created in 1887 by changing the designation of the Perth Artillery Volunteers. Captain G. B. Phillips continued in Command.

The two Armstrong-Whitworth guns were replaced by two 9Prs [9 pounders] in August 1894, which in turn were replaced by 15Pr B. L. guns [15 pounder breach loading guns] in 1902. The corps continued to play a very active part in Defence activities, especially in connection with the firing of salutes on official occasions. In 1903 under the Federal Defence Organization scheme the corps became No. 1 W.A. Battery, A.F.A. [No. 1 Western Australian Battery, Australian Field Artillery].

Plantagenet Rifles

The following is an extract from the book written in 1962 by George F. Wieck called The Volunteer Movement in Western Australia 1861-1903, p. 51:

Plantagenet Rifles
The "Plantagenet Rifles" was Gazetted on 6 May 1899, its predecessor having been disbanded. When that disbandment was decreed all arms etc. were ordered to be returned to store, and the hope was expressed that members would tom the new corps, Captain L. V. de Hamel was appointed to Command and he had with him an experienced aide in Lieutenant J. Moir, who had been a member of both previous bodies. From 21 March 1893 to 28 March 1894 the functions of Command were vested in the Officer Commanding Permanent Forces, Captain de Hamel having resigned as from 21 March 1893.

There being insufficient gunners of the Permanent Forces at Albany to properly "man" the guns of the Fixed Defences many members of the Plantagenet Rifles volunteered to receive training qualifying them as relief gunners.

The corps strength was 63 in 1889, 31 in 1892, 41 in 1895. Disbandment of the corps was gazetted on 29 April 1897, no reason being stated.

Captain F Clare, 28 March 1894

Fremantle Artillery Volunteers

The following is an extract from the book written in 1962 by George F. Wieck called The Volunteer Movement in Western Australia 1861-1903, pp. 51 - 52:

Fremantle Artillery Volunteers
Formerly the Naval Artillery Volunteers, approval for the change of designation was published on 17 December 1888. There were then 38 names on the Roll.

On 31 January 1889, Lieutenant F Wemyss resigned from the corps and on 5 February 1889 applications were publicly called for the vacant position. Captain E Mayhew, the successful applicant, was appointed on 5 April 1889.

The very obsolete 6Pdr guns [6 pounder guns] were replaced on 18 February 1889 by two 9Pdr R.M.L. field guns [9 pounder rifled muzzle loading field guns], complete with limbers and wagons, the whole being a gift from the British Government valued at £850.

Recruitment was a constant problem: in 1892 there were 22 names on the Roll, 44 in 1894, and when 22 members were discharged (chiefly owing to non-attendance) in 1899 there was danger of disbandment.

The corps designation was changed on 24 October 1892 to No. 2 Battery, Field Artillery. See: No. 2 Battery, Field Artillery.

Officers of the Fremantle Artillery Volunteers

Lieutenant F Wemyss, 17 December 1888

Captain E Mayhew, 5 April 1889

No. 2 Battery, Field Artillery
This corps was created by changing the designation of the Fremantle Artillery Volunteers as from 24 October 1892. Nothing else was changed at the time. Strength was low, there being only 22 names on the Roll.

In 1902 the 9Pdr R.M.L. field guns [9 pounder rifled muzzle loading field guns], were replaced by two 15 Pdr B.L. field guns [15 pounder breach loading field guns], complete with limbers, wagons, etc. This was the type of field gun used by the British Army throughout the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-02.

The corps was absorbed by the Federal Defence Organization on 1 July 1903.
