Hi, I am the Grandaughter of Ernest McCrohon who served with the 1/12 ALH from Sept1915-1919. I am writing a historical novel of which some of the story takes place in WW1 and you guessed it the Light Horse. I am very proud of my heritage and am embarrassed to admit that i only stumbled on this web site tonight. I am very excited to be able to ask all my questions and have a forum of replies.

I have conducted research at the War Memorial and have copies of my Grandfathers service history, as incomplete as that is? If anyone can help me with one query that i have? Aproximately how long was the training time for new recruits before they embarked for active duty? I can not find an embarkation document? I am trying to piece together the first few months of his service..

Unfortunately at the moment i cannot get access to all the great research facilities in Aus as i am living abroad in Malaysia with my husband and children as he is currently serving with the RAAF. I am also ex-service so as you can see the military is in the blood. Anyway i just wanted to say Bravo to those who started this great site and i look forward to reading and writing often. Also i am keen to get that book 'The Desert Column' if anyone can give me a name of a store that would be great. Thanks
