From the information I have at hand, there is really no clear indication of the number of Turkish defending Beersheeba on the day of the charge. Many escaped. Many were captured. It is all quite unclear. Let it be known however, that the Aussie soldiers thought of the Turkish soldiers as worthy advisaries rather than enemies, and treated them well. They called them all "Jacko" as a term of endearment and always thought highly of them. My old grandfather used to state "they could fight!"
