extract from The Australian Bloodhorse by D.M Barrie: "Two that did return home to Australasia were Sandy, the charger of General Bridges, which followed the gun-carriage at his funeral:his head may now be seen in the Australian War Memorial Museum Canberra; and Bess, a New Zealand mare belonging to Colonel Powles,C.M.G.,D.S.O. This beautiful mare left New Zealand in October 1914, was in Egypt in 1915,Sinai 1916,Palestine 1917-18,France 1918,Germany 1919, and England 1920. She was returned to New Zealand in July 1920 to become the dam of at least 2 foals."
