The Australian units serving in SOuth Africa were all mounted. When they left Australia they wore their own uniforms, but on arrival in SA attempts were made to dress them in British uniforms. Alas most of them were too large for the uniforms made for the british soldiers. Slouch hats were initially replaced with helmets because they were less like the Boer hats (Chauvel was almost shot while riding a captured pony and wearing a slouch hat) But a study of photographs will show that this didnt last long and the riders went back to their own uniforms
