The 8th LH Regt. was mainly raised from the Eastern suburbs of Melb and regional centres. eg. Western District through to Gippsland. Occupations varied from breadcarter like Alfred Chalmers, my great uncle, to farm workers like Sam McColl (KIA Gallipoli 7th Aug.), Alan McColl (KIA 1st Gaza) of Mansfield, Col. Maygar VC (Boer War) (KIA Palestine) and A.A Anderson of Mitcham. (KIA Gallipoli 7th Aug.)

There are regimental photos in The All Australia Memorial- a leather bound book that lists the regimental numbers of the first enlisments printed in 1917 and t surfaces from time to time.

The Army Records section is excellent. If you request a specific soldiers service record, you will receive a detailed list of unit, injuries, charges etc. The only trouble is that it takes about 4 months.

Hope this helps
