Hello,

I am special projects officer with the Department of Veterans' Affairs currently working in the Commemorations section of the NSW State Office. One of my projects involves the coordination and organisation of a workshop with the theme of 'Caring for Wartime Memorabilia'. A similar workshop was held here in April last year which had twin themes of oral history and small items of memorabilia. It is hoped this one will enhance and expand upon the memorabilia theme, and provide practical advice for those involved with collecting, preserving and displaying wartime memorabilia. As well, I would envisage some history groups or societies also invited in order to pass on information of this type to their grassroots members. At this stage, I am looking at the end of November as the probable date (probably Mon 26th Nov). The day is planned to go from 9am to about 3pm. The venue will be our offices at 280 Elizabeth Street. Details are yet to be finalised, but it is hoped the workshops would be free, or at a very small charge to participants. The planning is at the very early stages, but naturally time is critical and details will have to be finalised as soon as possible to ensure all goes smoothly. I am looking at about 5-6 themes for different 'hands on' workshops: papers/documents/books photographs/artworks medals textiles metals audio-visual/motion picture These loosely follow the themes in the DVA booklet concerning memorabilia. Anyone who would like to be included in a possible invitation list are welcome to email me with details of their organisation/museum/group, together with phone-fax-email numbers. I can be contacted on (02) 9213 7902, through the switch on 9213 7777, faxing (02) 9213 7030 or by email: john.hall@dva.gov.au. It is hoped that special speakers and specialists would be available on the day to conduct the separate workshops in the specific areas of interest. Naturally, numbers for the workshops would be limited, although we would like to be able to offer participants the chance to attend at least two or three of the workshops, depending on time constraints and the final schedule. Please feel free to contact me or pass on this information to other parties who may be interested in attending. Note: the focus of the day is wartime memorabilia, and preference will be given (if numbers have to be restricted) to those groups in this area. Thank you.
