Steve, thanks very much for your info. The reason for my query related to my Grandfather - he was evacuated from Galipolli with enteric and spent about 6 months in England before returning to Egypt early 1916. In a letter he stated that he was unable to get back to the old regiment ( he was an original 8thLH )" as all the officers are new and call for their own reinforcement men , well you can tell what we old lot think of it. Most of us a sitting tight til we see what comes up". Checking his service dossier i noticed that for a great part of 1916 he spent it in the 3rd Reserve Regiment and later the 3rd Double Sqd. before ending up in the 3 LHFA. Anyway your info has been a help in clarifying this for me. But i was still wondering what did they got up to ? Grandads letter suggested quite a few old hands were there, more training would seem a waste of time /resources.Did these 'units' keep official diaries relating to ther movements or day to day activities?
