I was watching the pay TV the other night with a program of the Light Horse and noticed this stat which comes up from time to time in written form or other.

That there was no Light Horse officer captured during the war?

This is of cause wrong or at lest incorrect.

Why?

Strickly speaking there was no officer from a LH regiment captured, but to say that no LH officer is wrong, as there were a number of LH officers captured with other units, eg, AFC and Camel Corps,

case in point; Willian Martin Fender 2/Lt Bsqn/6 LHR trsf to camel corps in july 1916 served in the 2co 1st Anzac Bn was wounded and left in the Tank redoubt trench during the 2nd Battle of Gaza, reported MIA by his battalion and confirmed captured by the Turks, for two years the Red Cross and his family tried to locate him but the Turkish goverment would not pass on his location. At the end of the War the returning prisoners told how Lt Fender had been shot in the throat and left for dead during the fighting in Tank Redoubt and he was later found to have died from his wounds there in the trench before turkish medical help could arrive, why was he reported captured which kept his family in torment for over two years, clercical error?

look forward to your comments!
