Discussions on the theory of elevation noted. Fair enough.

There is another aspect. The average soldier was a fairly ordinary marksman. A rifleman, or indeed a section of riflemen, would be wasting ammo engaging at 1600 yds. However, where you have massed defenders and ranges to key points confirmed, enough shots could be sent down to have some hit and the attackers incur casualties early in the piece. There was no problem in the defenders disclosing their position.
