While doing reseach on the embarkation roll of the 12th Reinforcements for the Camel Corps, I was surprised to find a large number of men either not on the AIF nominal roll or shown as different service numbers in other units.

Some checking found that a number were disembarked in Melbourne Vic to hospital and relisted in the 4th Light Horse Regiment, others disembarked in Perth and relisted in the 10th Light Horse, while others there was no record.

I took one name and sent to the Australian archives to find what happened to him. I mite say it is not unusal for a name to be missing on the AIF Nom Roll or under other number but what I dicovered surprised me.

The men had enlisted in Sydney and is shown as 18 years old he embarked with his unit but once the ship docked in Perth he jumped ship. He was posted as a Deserter and disappeared. His family was informed and later a saddened mother wrote to the War Dept to ask them if they found her son, she said the boy was only 16 years when he enlisted and was concerned for him. As far as I know he did not show up and was discharged in absentee in 1920.

Now what happen to possibly four other men not on the AIF nom roll did they desert to or put in hospital some where and discharged there without going overseas? I wait now for their records from archives!
