I think a salient point is that the BVC were a quasi military unit. Witton received a commission if he brought 15 men with him. They appear to carry out the role of a police force, but be sanctioned by military law. Therefore, (and I also disagree with Steve Becker's view that they deserved their fate), a comparison with the SS, as enforcers of law dispensed in a military fashion is justifiable.
