Dear Andrew: I'm delighted to learn that there are still Chauvels! I discovered the family began in France, when many perished in the French Revolution! However in 1685, Simon & Margaret Chauvel fled to England. Their offspring became officers in the Indian army & in the late 1830's others landed in Australia! The late Charles, film director, was born in Oct 1897 & died in 1959. A rather oddly titled site <www.csse.monash.edu.au/-pringle/silent/ssotm/Oct98> has some book references to Charles & Elsa, his wife. Now Melissa, I'm sorry that site isn't working. I've not been at it for quite some time. But John Lisle's main site is at <www.outbacksolutions.com>. I believe his e-mail address is <outback@2xtreme.net> Probably he'd help you get his Beersheba one? Meanwhile a good friend, an Aussie lady living in Arizona heard from a lady in Sydney about a Lighthorseman hitting his 100th birthday! While he had messages from the Queen, Governor-General, PM & a Mayor & was gifted with a special presentation Light Horse hat & Emu plume, it turns out he enlisted in WW1 at 16, claiming 18. 3 months later the war was over so he never saw active service! I wonder does this old "rascal" now have to return his hat & plume? Shades of Rostand's "Cyrano De Bergerac" & "mon panache"!!! Sincerely, John.
