Hi Nick,
As an extra to what Rob posted, I've put up an article concerning the brass 'A' worn by the original Anzacs. Check the following address: <a href = "http://www.anzacs.org/aforanzac.html" target="_blank">www.anzacs.org/aforanzac.html</a>
This is up temporarily only, and I'll have to remove it within the next couple of days. The original article also has photos, but I haven't included these.
For the composition of the AIF and specifically the <font color="maroon">(1st) Australian Division</font> and the <font color="maroon">New Zealand & Australian Division</font>, you can't go past this site:
<font color="maroon">First AIF Order of Battle</font><br> <a href="http://www.adfa.edu.au/~rmallett/index.html" target="_blank">http://www.adfa.edu.au/~rmallett/index.html</a><br>
Excellent though it is, however, it does not seem to cover the 'other' units which formed part of the A&NZAC:
These were: the 7th Brigade of Indian Mountain Artillery, consisting of the 21st (Kohat) and 26th (Jacob's) Mountain Batteries (approx 820 men and 13 officers),
the Ceylon Planters' Rifle Corps, (approx. 150 men)
the Zion Mule Corps, and
the Indian Mule Cart Transport.
All these were 'Corps troops', part of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, but not part of either the Australian or New Zealand & Australian Divisions.
Regards,
Bryn www.anzacs.org
