Thanks Bryn and Rob. That straightened the theory part out. Now, the next part is the tactics. For instance, how many battalions would be kept in reserve? There must be a tatically proper way to do this as even at Fromelles and the Nek there is a reserve. What did the pay and supply companies do while their divisions were in battle? (Or is it too obvious?) Lastly, how did changes in the type of warfare affect numbers? ie. I remember reading somewhere that by war's end the number of Lewis guns had doubled per company (?) and that food distibution was far more organised.
