THE BREAD LINE.
While at Franvillers, in France, about the time Fritz was walking into those canteens unannounced, and the staffs in their pyjamas were beating off the foe with their walking sticks, a member of the 15th Field Ambulance was visited by his brother from a Tommy battalion.
After family matters had been discussed, the Tommy ventured the opinion that his brother was lucky to be in such a well-fed army as the A.I.F.
"Well fed!" echoed the digger. "Do you know that we are only getting one loaf of bread per day to every seven men?"
"You're still lucky, Jim. “was the reply. “We're on one loaf to every twenty-four men!"
