A duck-board track near Zonnebeke

This was one of the stories at a recent reunion. A ration party belonging to the 51st was moving along a duck-board track near Zonnebeke, in the muddy part of October, 1917, and included in it were the Battalion Dag and the Battalion Dope. The Dope was loaded to the limit with bully beef; the Dag carried - as usual - the jar of rum. Halfway up the line the Dope fell into a shell hole, and stuck fast. The harder he pulled with one foot, the deeper went the other; and he was up to the waist when the party decided to make a joint effort to haul him out. For half an hour they pulled and tugged without success - the Dope sank deeper and deeper. During the rescue operations the Dag sat on his rum jar, and gave gratuitous advice and scornful criticism. Then a five nine came over-50 yards away. The dag exhorted everyone to make further efforts, and began to get excited himself. The next shell was 25 yards off - too close for the Dag. Hoisting his rum-jar on his shoulder, he shouted as he streaked from the danger zone: "You'll never get him out! Hit the __ on the head, and stick in a cross!"
