Eight Children
One torpedo killed Eight Children, of one London family, but the mother of the eight was saved, as she had gone to see if the all-clear notice had been given. It took nine hours' continuous digging to get out the bodies. One boy of five years was deeply buried in the debris, but sustained only a few bruises, and the rescuers, were able to pass down hot beef tea before the child was released. When asked where he was he replied, "On my back!"
