Turkish Chivalry.
"One of them Still Kicking" (Carnarvon):- Your reference to Captain Leane and the 11th Battalion's attack on Gaba Tepe (W.M. 3/10/29) brought back both pleasant and sad memories to me. The assumption that we were allowed to embark with all our wounded, "helped by the chivalry of the Turkish machine gunners, who withheld their fire while the casualties were being carried to the boats," is not a correct one, I will guarantee that a trench rat could not have survived the barrage put in by the destroyer Chilina, let alone a Turkish machine gunner, and the barrage was kept up until we were well clear of the shore. If you would like confirmation of this or any other information on the landing at Gaba Tepe consult "Doc" Brennan, the battalion medical officer, who was a member of the landing party.
