War Service Homes Stoppage.
The R.S.L. has been notified that £30,000 has been advanced by the Commonwealth Treasury to enable activities under the War Service Homes Act to be resumed. That amount is for the whole of Australia, and on the usual allocation this State will receive about £5,000 sufficient to carry on with a mere half dozen building proposals.
At present there are 250 Western Australian applications in hand and it is a strange thing that money can be had under the Commonwealth Housing Scheme whilst there is a shortage of funds for diggers' homes. The interest rates charged are 5 per cent, by the War Service Homes Commission and 6½ per cent, under the Housing Scheme.
The Commonwealth is the responsible authority for diggers' homes, but the State assumes all responsibility under the Housing Scheme, the Commonwealth merely making money available through its bank.
On the face of it there seems to be a desire to shepherd soldiers into the less liberal conditions of the Federal Government's later scheme.
