SOLDAT AUSTRALIE!
Dear Non-Com." - Passing through Corbie about the time Pompey Elliott's crowd stopped the rot on their front down on the Somme in ‘18. I heard an old dame bestow the best compliment I ever heard on the diggers. The civilians had been ordered to imshi, because Fritz was advancing quickly, and two old madams were painfully carting their goods away in a hand-cart. Suddenly, with a roar and a curse and a ribald song, the old 51st swung round the corner!
One of the old women gave a squeal of delight. "Soldat Australie?" she said, excitedly.
"Oui, madam!" replied the staff officer, entrusted with the task of seeing that orders were obeyed and the civilians evacuated.
"Tres bon! Finne la Bosche," said the dear old soul, as she started to cart her goods back again into the house.
"Old Mac," Dongarra Beach.
