The Southern Cross Ball The Southern Cross sub-branch of the recently held a ball for the purpose of assisting a member and his family who had experienced a rough spin. The use of Goodin's picture hall was donated by the proprietors; the Southern Cross jazz band gave its services free and Mrs. James and a willing band of helpers took charge of the supply column. The local electrician, Len Carbon, decorated the hall with the assistance of many volunteers, with results which contributed vastly to the evening's success. The attendance was a record for the old town although the night was hot. Ration carriers were early on the scene with ice cream and claret cups, finishing their tour of duty with supper at ll p.m. President Keightley and Secretary Allen were freely congratulated on the result of the most enjoyable ball held in Southern Cross in late years. On a total expenditure of just over a fiver the sum of £25 was available for the recipients, which demonstrated that the old traditions created in the Cross an the 'nineties are being worthily maintained for its present generation.
