The Australian soldier who forwards this photograph from Cairo writes:- "In one of our little excursions into the bush we came across a Sudanese medicine man, whom we rounded up, and, despite his evident horror of the camera, photographed. The non-com. on the blackfellow's right is Sergeant Waugh of the New South Wales Transport Column. The trooper on his left is Tom Herford, a well-known Balmain boy."

Those named were:-

52 Sergeant John Carlton WAUGH, a 20 year old Horse breaker from 63 Mount Street North Sydney, New South Wales. He enlisted on 17 August 1914 and was allotted to the 1st Battalion, Headquarters which embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A19 Afric on 18 October 1914. During the Gallipoli Campaign he remained in Egypt. He subsequently Returned to Australia, 21 March 1919.

70 Private Thomas Elias HERFORD, a 30 year old Shopman from Jersey Road, Parramatta, New South Wales. He enlisted on 17 August 1914 and was allotted to the 1st Battalion, Headquarters which embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A19 Afric on 18 October 1914. During the Gallipoli Campaign he was Wounded in Action, 9 August 1915. He subsequently Died of wounds, 7 October 1915.
