Artillery Officers Captured at Gaza
While not stated in the original album, it is suspected that these Turkish prisoners were captured during the 1st Battle of Gaza, 26-27 March 1917. A close examination of the picture indicates that the men are not officers as claimed but enlisted men, as the uniforms used are those of that rank. The men were commonly known as Mehmetcik, "Little Mehmet"; the Turkish equivalent of the British "Tommy", the Australian "Digger", the French "Poilu", and the German "Landser".
