During the Great War, the 2nd LHR saw service in Egypt, Gallipoli, the Sinai Peninsula, Palestine and Jordan. It returned to Australia in March 1919.

Second Lieutenant Herbert Gerald HINTON, a 37 year old Farmer from Forest Hill, Queensland. He enlisted in the AIF on 20 August 1914 and was allotted to the 2nd Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, "A" Squadron which embarked from Brisbane, Queensland on board HMAT A15 Star of England 24 September 1914. HINTON subsequently was Wounded in Action, 19 May 1915. During the Great War, HINTON was Killed in Action, 7 August 1915.
