SENSATION IN A TRAIN.

MILITARY ESCORT SHOOTS.

A PRISONER KILLED.

A sensational affray, in which military prisoners and their escort were engaged, took place in the Sydney express train last evening, near Seymour. One of the prisoners, H. M. Jemmett, of New South Wales, who belonged to the 59th Battalion, was shot, and when the train reached Seymour he was found to be dead. The body was left at Seymour to await an inquest.

According to official reports, the prisoners, who numbered nine, had come off a transport, and were being taken to Sydney, under guard, for detention. When the train was about half an hour's run from Seymour one of the prisoners caught a member of the escort by the throat. Three other prisoners assisted in getting the man down in the corridor, but at this stage the other members of the escort came to the rescue, and the prisoners were pushed back into the compartment.

A sttuggle then took place, the officials state, between Jemmett and one of the escort for possession of the latter's rifle, and when Jemmett got the weapon another member of the escort drew his revolver and ordered the prisoner to drop the rifle. Jemmett did not obey, and was shot with the revolver. When the train reached Seymour one of the prisoners jumped out of the carriage, but was recaptured.

The eight prisoners were taken on by the train.
