Liman von Sanders
Liman von Sanders, who died recently, was the brain behind the Turkish defence of Gallipoli, and his leadership Was so able that quickly the British hopes of ever breaking through tn Constantinople faded out. Von Sanders was one of the Germans marked in the Allied Black Book to be called to account for war-time "crimes," but his name was finally erased through a protest by Sir Ian Hamilton in the London "Times." Hamilton reckoned that von Sanders was a clever, but chivalrous foe.
