M. JEAN MARDUEL
The death has occurred in Paris of M. Jean Marduel whose name will be well remembered by all surviving members of the Australian Flying Corps, the forerunner of the Royal Australian Air Force. M Marduel was in Australia when war broke out, and he was largely responsible for training the pilots of Australia s first flying squadron.
M Marduel flew first in Sydney with M Guillaux another Frenchman whose feats in the air attracted much attention in those early days of flying. M Marduel went with No 2 Squadron, AFC, to Egypt and Palestine, and after the war he was associated with Aerial Services Limited in conducting the first flying survey across Australia. He was aged 56 years. At the time of his death he was visiting France for Birt and Co Ltd, of Sydney by whom he was employed.
