Passing of a Tradition.
The disappearance of the A.I.F. pattern uniform as the official dress of the Australian soldier will be regretted by those who wore it in the Great War. As a service uniform I think it possessed unique qualities of utility, comfort and, given reasonable care in filling, rugged beauty. No more soldier-like figures graced the Strand, crowded with the military representatives of most nations, than the digger on leave. There was a sturdy harmony about the whole outfit which pleased the eye and its unconventional appearance made it as outstanding a uniform as the man inside was as a soldier.
It is indeed a pity that the old uniform and its great traditions should have been so lightly cast on the scrapheap. The whole trouble has been the careless fitting of the compulsory trainee. A little care, perhaps a little extra expense in that direction, a few instructions on the correct method of wearing an Aussie hat and there would have been no widespread desire to change the pattern. As it is I do not think that there was ever a pronounced desire to effect a change. In my opinion a great mistake has been made.
