3946 Private Ernest Frederick BOWEN, 49th Battalion.
3946 Private Ernest Frederick BOWEN, an 18 year old Labourer from Withington Street, East Brisbane, Queensland enlisted in the AIF on 1 November 1915 and was allotted to the 25th Battalion, 9th Reinforcement which embarked from Brisbane, Queensland, on board HMAT Wandilla on 31 January 1916. When the 5th Division was formed in Egypt, BOWEN was transferred to the new 49th Battalion. During the Great War, BOWEN was wounded in action and subsequently returned to Australia on 4 May 1917 and discharged as medically unfit for military duties on 1 August 1917.
