A MORTGAGE THAT TOOK SOME LIFTING.
Dear "Non-Com," - We were being relieved from a particularly hot part of the Somme area by the Tommies. The change over was taking place rather hurriedly in the early hours of the morning, and as we scrambled out our jovial "sarge” (Joe) was anxious to know who our welcome relief were.
"Who are you, choom?" he stuttered.
"We're The Queen's Own," came the reply.
"Well," said Joe, “I’ll write and tell her you've left her as Old Nick's got a mortgage on you while yer in this blanky joint."
