Soldier Settlement.

According to Mr. D.M. Hermon's annual report, soldier settlement activities have formed a considerable part of the daily routine of headquarters staff during the last 12 months. The Land Committee has functioned efficiently and the League's standing and relationship with the Agricultural Bank and other departments are on a very high plane. The revaluation of properties and relief for soldier settlers cannot be solved as a general practice, but any settler who considers that he can't make his farm pay because the capital liability is too high, conditions too rigorous, land defective, more pasture needed, or is in receipt of notices which unduly harass him, is advised by the State secretary to get in touch with the nearest sub-branch of the R.S.L. The sub-branch will then appoint a committee knowing local conditions which will investigate, report and recommend to the State executive land committee which will consider the question and deal direct with the Agricultural Bank or department concerned. Collapse of overseas markets, over-capitalisation, patchy seasons, pests and problems of local marketing have been contributing factors in many cases of distress, but with the usual sympathetic and sometimes generous consideration by both Federal and State Governments, the "dinkum" trier should win out. Difficulties arise to be overcome and in grappling with the problems of land settlement the digger should have no diffidence in stating his case to the league.
