Melbourne Leader, 24 October 1914, p. 21
The four and eight oared races for members of the Expeditionary Forces on Friday last proved to be very interesting. The rowing in some of the crews was really good, and the Light Horse crew which won the eights would most likely have proved a match for any of the eights competing at Henley this afternoon. It was a great victory for Geelong College and Geelong Grammar School, seeing that seven members of the crew and the Coxswain were old boys of the two schools mentioned the No. man, J. Webster being stroke of the Geelong Grammar crew which won the schools race last May. J. H. S. Jackson, the coxswain of the Melbourne University crew, which won the last inter-varsity race, has a double success, as he steered the winning eight and rowed No. 2 in the winning four. The winning eight was stroked by Len Davis, the Amateur Champion Sculler, whilst H. S. Dickinson, stroke of the last Victorian crew; stroked the crew which rowed second. After the racing the crews adjourned to Sargents for dinner, after which a very pleasant musical evening was spent, and medals, the gifts of the officers, presented to the winners. The officials for the racing were:- Umpire, Mr. B. Nolan; starter, Mr. H. Rose-Soden; judge, Major Johnston. The racing resulted as follows:- Squadron Fours. - First Heat: Officers, 1; B Squadron, 2; A Squadron, 3. Second Heat: C Squadron, 1; Details, 2. Final: C Squadron (D. Thomas, stroke, C. M. Armytage 3, J. H. S. Jackson 2, L. A. Austin bow), 1; Officers, 2. Won by a quarter of a length.
