The Game
General Brand tells a story of two 16th Battalion men whom he came across in a front line trench, one looking up over No Man's Land the other gazing the opposite way down Kent Road, a communication trench from the front line to Old French Trench.
"What's the game?” asked the Brig.
"I'm watching those _ over there and my cobber is watching those _ back there!" came the reply.
The joke lay in the fact that 'The _ over there" were German minniewerfa bombs, while "the _ back there" were our own 6in trench mortars (plum puddings). Both missiles could be seen coming and both had a nasty habit of falling, in our front line.
