On the 4th. July, 1918, during the operations East of HAMEL, Lieut. CORNISH was Officer in charge of a P1atoon.
On reaching the Wood just East of the first objective his Platoon was held up by two enemy Machine Guns. Lieut. CORNISH immediately rushed these Machine Guns, killing the gunners operating one and capturing the crew of the second gun. He then successfully led his Platoon to the final objective, reorganized, and mounted captured German Machine Guns to assist in the defense of his new position.
On tha night 4th/5th. July about 300 of the enemy rushed part of our trenches and succeeded in penetrating them at several points. In the counterr-attack organised to check the enemy this Officer played a conspicuous part, leading his men forward and engaging the enemy in hand-to-hand fights with conspicuous bravery. He was successful in restoring the situation on his front.
Later in the same evening he led his Platoon against an enemy Strong Point in NO MAN'S LAND, killing many of the enemy and capturing several prisoners and also 3 Machine Guns.
Throughout the whole operations Lieut. CORNISH displayed conspicuous gallantry in action and set a magnificent example of devotion to duty to the men of his command.
