NOW, DID THEY?
He was a marvellously accoutred, dazzlingly polished, but very raw product of Sandhurst when he reported to me in the front line at Laventie. I sent him to the Q.M.'s stores to dump his regalia and to don something less conspicuous.
A while later he reappeared, clad in conventional Tommy's tunic, but complaining that he had caught some sort of disease.
"An itch," he explained. "An irritation all over my body."
"That's all right," I assured him. "They're lice. Your chatty."
"But __” he gasped, horrified. "Officers don't have lice, do they?"
