Not too far
"Stinker," the platoon officer's batman, was told by his boss to get back "not too far and have a sleep. Not too far" was a bit vague, but "Stinker" was sick of shell-fire and wanted a possy that was not likely to be disturbed by any unwelcome visitors. The sight of a travelling kitchen on its beams-end convinced him that the transport lines were "not far enough" so he continued on his way. Then an important looking person stopped him with: "Hey lad, where are you going!" "Stinker" informed him of his mission. "Humph!" said the M.P.. "don't you ever stand to attention when you speak to a general?" "A general!" gasped "Stinker." "Gorblimey! Am I that far back?"
