Captain W. Lynas, D.S.O., M.C.

"Bill" Lynas was one of the founders of the Pilbarra sub-branch of the R.S.L. He was also one of those who founded the traditions of the A.I.F. His record with the 16th Battalion was unique, as he landed on Gallipoli a private (signaller) and commanded the battalion, in its last "stunt" against the outposts of the Hindenburg Line in 1918. As scout officer' in France he was "king" of No Man's Land, and the thrilling adventures through which Lynas took his scout patrols would fill a book. He was on duty in England when news of the Bullecourt disaster came through, in which the 16th was nearly wiped out. Hill took "French" leave, rejoined the remnants of the battalion, and was afterwards nearly court-martialled for being absent without leave from his training camp in England! He was a brilliant soldier and leader of men, and had the luck to come through unharmed. He was awarded the D.S.O., M.C., and two bars, and by all accounts some of his exploits were worth the little red ribbon which caps the lot. Hill was working a show up Marble Bar way recently, and was a mate of that other splendid soldier, the one-armed Captain Don. McLeod, of the 12th Battalion, when the latter fell down a shaft and was killed, it was Lynas who brought the body to the surface and attended to the last sad rites.
