4th Light Horse Signal Troop, AIF, 3rd Reinforcement, embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board SS Makarini 10 September 1915.
The SS Makarini weighed 10,624 tons with an average cruise speed of 13 knots or 24.07 kmph. It was owned by G.D.Tyser & Co, London. Accommodation for 750-steerage class passengers. Built by Workman, Clark & Co, Belfast, she was launched on 3rd Feb.1912. In 1914 Tyser's was taken over by the Commonwealth & Dominion Line (Port Line) and she was renamed SS Port Nicholson. Mined and sunk 15 miles West of Dunkirk 15 January1917. 1681 Sapper Herbert Sydney MAXWELL, a 21 year old Wireless operator from Parramatta, New South Wales. He enlisted on 22 July 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 20 December 1917.
