"At a mile distant their thousand hooves were stuttering thunder, coming at a rate that frightened a man - they were an awe inspiring sight, galloping through the red haze - knee to knee and horse to horse - the dying sun glinting on bayonet points..." Trooper Ion Idriess

New South Wales Imperial Bushmen

War Diary, 20 August 1900

New South Wales Imperial Bushmen War Diary, 20 August 1900.

This is an extract from the War Diary written by Major David Miller, Adjutant of the New South Wales Imperial Bushmen who arrived in the Mozambique port of Biera and then moved to Rhodesia as part of the journey for deployment in South Africa to see action in the Boer War.

20 Aug 1900 - Monday
In camp at Otto's Hoop. Heavy fighting from noon until 4p.m. renewed after dark. We are losing about 20 horses per diem from the fire.

Note all supplies in tins should be restricted to 1lb in weight. 6lb tins of meat are most inconvenient for distribution to troops. Oats are inferior - green - kiln dried - compressed forage necessary as neither hay nor chaff is available - grazing is out of the question - Butchers section most necessary to deal with stock secured.

Miller's column is still experiencing harassment from the Boers at Otto's Hoop. About 20 horses per day are being lost through the fighting although Miller does not mention if they are killed, wounded or captured. Miller also discusses the problems of supply. Six pound tins of meat are a problem as he prefers one pound cans. The oats are of an inferior quality. Since there was a nice supply of meat on the hoof, a butchers section was required.

This is a further instalment of the War Diary written by Major David Miller, Adjutant of the New South Wales Imperial Bushmen who arrived in the Mozambique port of Biera and then moved to Rhodesia as part of the journey for deployment in South Africa to see action in the Boer War.
