HMAT A70 Ballarat

 

9th Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, 10th Reinforcement Ballarat Group Adelaide, embarked from Adelaide, South Australia on board HMAT A70 Ballarat 14 September 1915.

The HMAT A70 Ballarat weighed 11,120 tons with an average cruise speed of 14 knots or 25.92 kmph. It was owned by the P & O SN Co, London. The Ballarat was torpedoed by a submarine in the English Channel, 25 April 1917 and sank the next day.

The ensuing individual soldier's embarkation information contains the following details:

Full name of the soldier

Declared age of the soldier;

The last occupation held;

The last address as a civilian;

Enlistment Date; and,

Fate.

1256 Private Clifford August ATKINS, a 19 year old Painter from Kent Town, South Australia. He enlisted on 16 June 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 28 March 1919.

 

1289 Private Herbert Emanuel BEST, a 30 year old Butcher from Port Adelaide, South Australia. He enlisted on 2 June 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 20 April 1919.

1259 Private Albert James BIGGINS, a 19 year old Labourer from Burnside, South Australia. He enlisted on 12 April 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 5 March 1919.

1290 Private Ambrose BOYLAN, a 20 year old Farmer from Springsure, South Australia. He enlisted on 21 June 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 20 November 1918.

1260 Private Rufus William BURNS, a 19 year old Plumber from Rosewater, South Australia. He enlisted on 31 May 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 18 July 1919.

1284 Private Edwin Guildford BUTLER, a 20 year old Labourer from Tumby Bay, South Australia. He enlisted on 18 June 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 15 May 1919.

 

1298 Private George Herbert DENNISON, an 18 year old Ship Builders mate from Gumeracha, South Australia. He enlisted on 18 June 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 21 May 1916.

1263 Private Lawrence John DOBSON, a 23 year old Traveller from Broome, Western Australia. He enlisted on 1 June 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 20 September 1919.

1264 Private Walter DRURY, a 35 year old Stone Cutter from Melbourne, Victoria. He enlisted on 1 June 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 17 August 1916.

 

1291 Private Arthur FORSYTH, a 37 year old Engineer from Peterhead, South Australia. He enlisted on 3 June 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 28 January 1919.

 

1266 Private Robert Lawrence GABELL, a 19 year old Diver from Stepney, South Australia. He enlisted on 24 May 1915; and subsequently was Discharged in Egypt, 24 August 1919.

1265 Private Alfred Joseph GARRATT, a 20 year old Tailors Cutter from Torrensville, South Australia. He enlisted on 24 May 1915; and subsequently Died of wounds, 18 July 1918.

1292 Private Hector George GILLIS, a 36 year old Farmer from Birkenhead, South Australia. He enlisted on 30 June 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 10 July 1919.

 

1283 Private Stuart Alexander HALLIDAY, a 19 year old Insurance Clerk from Stradbroke Park, South Australia. He enlisted on 2 June 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 1 July 1919.

1280 Private Leslie HARFORD, a 21 year old Butcher from Broken Hill, New South Wales. He enlisted on 27 May 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 10 July 1919.

1269 Private Kevin Bernard KEAN, an 18 year old Jockey from Belvedere, South Australia. He enlisted on 31 May 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 5 March 1919.

1296 Private Vernon Ross KEMP, a 26 year old Labourer from Broken Hill, New South Wales. He enlisted on 18 June 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 2 January 1919.

 

1281 Private Baron George Bridger LANE, a 32 year old Farmer from Adelaide, South Australia. He enlisted on 26 March 1915; and subsequently was Discharged in Egypt, 9 August 1919.
