HMAT A8 Argyllshire

 

7th Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, 9th Reinforcement, embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A8 Argyllshire on 30 September 1915.

The HMAT A8 Argyllshire weighed 10,392 tons with an average cruise speed of 14 knots or 25.92 kmph. It was owned by the Scottish Shire Line Ltd, London, and leased by the Commonwealth until 24 January 1918.

The ensuing individual soldier's embarkation information contains the following details:

1278 Private Arthur Henry BOWDEN, a 32 year old Stable Manager from Randwick, New South Wales. He enlisted on 27 August 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 14 October 1916.

1230 Private William Campbell BOWDEN, a 40 year old Shearer from Rockdale, New South Wales. He enlisted on 11 May 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 13 July 1915.

1228 Private Walter BROWN, a 38 year old Saddler from Adelong, New South Wales. He enlisted on 11 June 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 28 June 1919.

 

1234 Private Joseph Leo CARNEY, a 19 year old Butcher from Boolaroo, New South Wales. He enlisted on 4 July 1915; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 10 October 1917.

1235 Private Edward Thomas CASSIDY, a 24 year old Electrician from Leichhardt, New South Wales. He enlisted on 17 June 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 4 March 1919.

1233 Private Alton Kingsley CLARENCE, a 21 year old Station hand from Petersham, New South Wales. He enlisted on 29 June 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 11 May 1919.

1236 Private Harry CLEARY, a 24 year old Farmer from Merewether, New South Wales. He enlisted on 29 June 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 14 March 1919.

1232 Private Thomas CLUES, a 24 year old Farmer from Wagga, New South Wales. He enlisted on 8 December 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 17 July 1919.

 

1239 Private Thomas DAHL, a 26 year old Bushman from Coffs Harbor, New South Wales. He enlisted on 15 June 1915; and subsequently Died of Wounds, 11 September 1916.

1240 Private William DENT, a 22 year old Labourer from Wagga, New South Wales. He enlisted on 4 July 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 5 March 1919.

1241 Private Stanley Richard DOWTON, a 20 year old Carrier from Oaklands, New South Wales. He enlisted on 25 June 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 2 September 1916.

1238 Private Leith Dunlop DOYLE, a 29 year old Grazier from Moore Park Tamworth, New South Wales. He enlisted on 3 July 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 15 February 1918.

1242 Private Samuel James DUNKINSON, a 26 year old Boundary rider from Paddington, New South Wales. He enlisted on 25 March 1915; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 5 August 1916.

1245 Private Harry FINLEY, a 33 year old Blacksmith from Liverpool, New South Wales. He enlisted on 17 May 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 25 February 1919.

1246 Private Horace Ernest FRAZER, a 26 year old Labourer from Binnaway, New South Wales. He enlisted on 15 June 1915; and subsequently Died of Wounds, 7 August 1916.

1281 Private Edwin FULLER, a 21 year old Labourer from Parramatta, New South Wales. He enlisted on 23 July 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 12 November 1917.

A note on copyright

The Australian Light Horse Studies Centre is a not for profit and non profit group whose sole aim is to write the early history of the Australian Light Horse from 1900 - 1920. It is privately funded and the information is provided by the individuals within the group and while permission for the use of the material has been given for this site for these items by various donors, the residual and actual copyright for these items, should there be any, resides exclusively with the donors. The information on this site is freely available for private research use only and if used as such, should be appropriately acknowledged. To assist in this process, each item has a citation attached at the bottom for referencing purposes.
