The following is a transcription of the War Diary Signal 1645 of the Anzac Mounted Division of their role at the Battle of Rafa, Sinai, 9 January 1917.

Message:Force of enemy 2000 strong marching on El Magruntein from direction of Khan Yunis AAA Others seen in scattered formations on ridge in direction of Shellal AAA Distance from redoubts about 4 miles at 1615 AAA Force will withdraw and assemble at point 250 on the Karm Ibn Musleh - Sheikh Zowaiid Road AAA Brigades will find their own rear guards AAA CRA will arange for Batteries to take up position to cover withdrawal of Brigades AAA 8th LH Regiment will form a rearguard to cover withdrawal of all parties and camels.
