HMAT A55 Kyarra

 

13th Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, 3rd Reinforcement, embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board HMAT A55 Kyarra 20 August 1915.

The HMAT A55 Kyarra weighed 6,953 tons with an average cruise speed of 14 knots or 25.92 kmph. It was owned by the AUSN Co Ltd, London, and manned by Australia officers and crew. The Kyarra was leased by the Commonwealth until 4 January 1918. The Kyarra was torpedoed and sunk by a submarine in the English Channel, 26 May 1918.

The ensuing individual soldier's embarkation information contains the following details:

Rank on embarkation;

Full name of the soldier

Declared age of the soldier;

The last occupation held;

The last address as a civilian;

Enlistment Date; and,

Fate.

941 Private Leslie William BEARDS, a 19 year old Tailor from Melbourne, Victoria. He enlisted on 10 June 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 18 January 1919.

940 Private Theodore Charles BEGGS, an 18 year old Labourer from Elmhurst, Victoria. He enlisted on 14 June 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 21 March 1919.

925 Private Percy BUNGE, a 19 year old Station Hand from Penshurst, Victoria. He enlisted on 4 June 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 20 December 1918.

 

929 Private William James CAROLANE, a 22 year old Stud groom from Westgarth, Victoria. He enlisted on 8 June 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 19 April 1919.

954 Private Patrick CASSERLY, a 24 year old Engine fitter from Melbourne, Victoria. He enlisted on 14 June 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 6 October 1919.

947 Private James Nicholas CHARNLEY, a 20 year old Labourer from Melbourne, Victoria. He enlisted on 10 June 1915; and subsequently was Discharged in Britain, 15 February 1920.

 

924 Private Henry William DAVIDSON, a 19 year old Blacksmith from North Richmond, Victoria. He enlisted on 14 June 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 27 April 1919.

960 Private Albert DIETRICH, a 23 year old Farm hand from Morwell, Victoria. He enlisted on 14 June 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 13 April 1919.

928 Private Percy Michael DWYER, a 20 year old Labourer from Savernake, New South Wales. He enlisted on 5 June 1915; and subsequently Died of Disease, 7 November 1917.

959 Private Thomas Alphonsus DWYER, an 18 year old Farm Labourer from Savernake, Victoria. He enlisted on 5 June 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 8 April 1919.

 

930 Private Sydney Clarence EDWARDS, a 20 year old Labourer from Northcote, Victoria. He enlisted on 10 June 1915; and subsequently was Deserted, 2 September 1915.

961 Private Edward John ELWORTHY, a 27 year old Driver from Malvern, Victoria. He enlisted on 14 June 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 31 March 1919.

Lieutenant William EWING, a 29 year old Farmer from Avenel, Victoria. He enlisted on 20 March 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 29 May 1919.

 

931 Private John Henry FINCH, a 37 year old Miner from Bairnsdale, Victoria. He enlisted on 9 June 1915; and subsequently Died of Wounds, 16 November 1915.

956 Private William John FULFIT, a 26 year old Labourer from Massey, Victoria. He enlisted on 12 June 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 27 April 1919.

950 Private Edgar Henry FYVIE, a 22 year old Salvation Army officer from Carlton, Victoria. He enlisted on 12 June 1915; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 11 December 1915.

 

935 Private William GARDNER, a 25 year old Machinist from Melbourne, Victoria. He enlisted on 14 June 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 21 December 1918.

966 Private Thomas GILBERT, a 23 year old Farmer from Stawell, Victoria. He enlisted on 15 December 1914; and subsequently Died of Wounds, 16 November 1915.

973 Private Thomas Givens GOULDING, a 22 year old Farmer from Maiden Gully via Bendigo, Victoria. He enlisted on 26 May 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 1 July 1919.

951 Private Frederick Leslie GRANT, a 30 year old Driver from Fitzroy, Victoria. He enlisted on 12 June 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 9 February 1916.

967 Private Norman Allen GRANT, a 21 year old Tailors presser from Staghorn Flats, Victoria. He enlisted on 19 August 1915; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 5 October 1918.

942 Private Charles GRIFFIN, a 21 year old Labourer from Burnley, Victoria. He enlisted on 14 June 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 15 February 1918.

926 Private Stanley Baird HEMMING, a 25 year old Mechanic from Parkville, Western Australia. He enlisted on 14 June 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 12 April 1916.

911 Sergeant Robert Edward HENRY, a 35 year old Accountant from East Melbourne, Victoria. He enlisted on 13 March 1915; and subsequently was Discharged in Egypt, 25 March 1918.

HMAT A70 Ballarat

 

13th Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, 5th Reinforcement, embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board HMAT A70 Ballarat 9 September 1915.

The HMAT A70 Ballarat weighed 11,120 tons with an average cruise speed of 14 knots or 25.92 kmph. It was owned by the P & O SN Co, London. The Ballarat was torpedoed by a submarine in the English Channel, 25 April 1917 and sank the next day.
