9th Light Horse Regiment Location - HMAT A10 "Karroo", at sea.
9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary - No entry.
Carew Reynell Diary - Got to Port Said last night. Mare No. 16318 recovering rapidly and out of danger. Our loss of less than half per cent is, they tell us there, a world's record.
I think the Regiment has made useful progress during the voyage but if we had been able to prepare a number of instructors before the voyage it would have made our progress even greater.
The following instruction has been carried out:Officers - Semaphore [passed reading and sending test - standard time], Map reading and field sketch, Tactics, and sundry lectures.
Other Ranks - Squad drill, musketry instruction, miniature shooting, rifle exercises, bayonet fighting.
Signallers - signalling.
I am quite satisfied that a voyage can either be spent very profitably or be the means of not only not gaining any ground but positively losing ground, and it is very desirable that all officers, NCOs and men have reached a sufficient standard of training and discipline to be able to withdraw all senior supervision without risking the loss of discipline and attention to duty that always ensues when Officers and NCOs do not realise their powers and responsibilities if senior authority is not present.
On board ship this authority is necessarily usually absent and if the necessary standard has been reached it is rather a good thing as it puts the juniors on their mettle and yet there is no fear of them relaxing discipline.
