2nd Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, 7th Reinforcements, embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A9 Shropshire 20 August 1915.

The HMAT A9 Shropshire weighed 8,130 tons with an average cruise speed of 15 knots or 27.78 kmph. It was owned by the Federal SN Co Ltd, London, and leased by the Commonwealth until 5 August 1917.

 

The ensuing individual soldier's embarkation information contains the following details:

Rank on embarkation;

Full name of the soldier;

Declared age of the soldier;

The last occupation held;

The last address as a civilian;

Enlistment Date; and,

Fate.

1079 Private Percival ALDIS, a 23 year old Labourer from Acacia Creek, New South Wales. He enlisted on 4 February 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 13 April 1919.

1080 Private Matthew ANGUS, a 34 year old Labourer from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 1 February 1915; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 9 January 1917.

 

1082 Private Allan BALDWIN, a 26 year old Farmer from Millaa via Cairns, Queensland. He enlisted on 28 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 13 March 1919.

1083 Private John James BOYLE, a 21 year old Labourer from Indooroopilly, Queensland. He enlisted on 28 January 1915; and subsequently Died of Wounds, 12 January 1917.

 

1085 Private Harold CHESTER, a 21 year old Stockman from The Valley, Queensland. He enlisted on 23 January 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 11 March 1916.

1084 Private Henry CORNELIUS, a 28 year old Labourer from Willunga, South Australia. He enlisted on 1 February 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 26 July 1919.

 

1088 Private Robert Hunsley DEAKIN, a 21 year old Station hand from Bellthorpe, Queensland. He enlisted on 2 February 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 3 July 1919.

1089 Private Edward DEDMAN, a 35 year old Miner from Bowden, South Australia. He enlisted on 1 February 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 29 January 1919.

1113 Signaller Arthur Sennott DILLON, a 22 year old Cordial manufacturer from Cairns, Queensland. He enlisted on 20 December 1914; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 25 March 1919.

1127 Signaller John Walter DONNELLY, a 31 year old Telegraph operator from Wireless House Sydney, New South Wales. He enlisted on 13 March 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 13 March 1919.

1086 Private Abel DOUPAIN, a 23 year old Shearer from Narrabri, New South Wales. He enlisted on 17 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 28 August 1919.

1090 Private Charles Edward DUFF, a 22 year old Stockman from Channing, Queensland. He enlisted on 15 March 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 7 April 1919.

1114 Private Patrick DUFFY, a 20 year old Butcher from McLean, New South Wales. He enlisted on 18 February 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 15 November 1918.

 

1126 Signaller Ernest Henry ETHERIDGE, a 28 year old Book keeper from Hawthorn, Victoria. He enlisted on 26 March 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 21 April 1918.

 

1103 Private Samuel FELSCHOW, a 22 year old Sawyer from Moolah, Queensland. He enlisted on 24 May 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 12 June 1919.

 

1087 Private Henry Morford GARDNER, a 20 year old Farmer from Teal Flat, South Australia. He enlisted on 2 February 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 13 April 1919.

1078 Private Frank GERAHTY, a 28 year old Stockman from Charters Towers, Queensland. He enlisted on 6 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 13 March 1919.

1125 Private Francis Edmund GILLHAM, a 22 year old Station overseer from Toowoomba, Queensland. He enlisted on 12 March 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 13 March 1919.

1092 Private Charles Daniel GORMAN, a 21 year old Labourer from Rockingham, Queensland. He enlisted on 8 February 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 13 March 1919.

1091 Private Frederick Wallace GRAU, an 18 year old Labourer from Atherton, Queensland. He enlisted on 28 January 1915; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 14 July 1918.

 

1094 Private Norman HANSLOW, a 24 year old Labourer from Newtown, Tasmania. He enlisted on 30 December 1914; and subsequently Died of Wounds, 22 April 1917.

1095 Private Frank HIGGINS, a 24 year old Coach driver from Leichhardt, New South Wales. He enlisted on 5 February 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 31 May 1919.

 

1124 Private William Neilson Leslie JACK, a 20 year old Stockman from Toowong, Queensland. He enlisted on 15 May 1915; and subsequently Died of Wounds, 3 October 1917.

1096 Private Edward George JARMAN, a 22 year old Labourer from Wondai, Queensland. He enlisted on 6 February 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 30 August 1918.

1119 Private Robert THOMPSON, a 44 year old Labourer from Toowoomba, Queensland. He enlisted on 31 January 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 11 May 1916.

 

1120 Private William VALENTINE, a 24 year old Stockman from Quambatook, Victoria. He enlisted on 31 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 8 April 1919.

 

1117 Private Albert Stuart WALLACE, a 22 year old Labourer from Booval, Queensland. He enlisted on 18 April 1915; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 31 October 1917.

1122 Private William Henry WATERS, a 30 year old Station hand from Hawksburn, Victoria. He enlisted on 3 February 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 13 March 1919.

1121 Private Archibald James WATT, a 21 year old Farmer from Home Hill, Queensland. He enlisted on 4 February 1915; and subsequently Died of Disease, 23 December 1915.

1128 Acting Sergeant George Henry WEEDMAN, a 24 year old Draughtsman from Lutwyche, Queensland. He enlisted on 4 March 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 23 December 1918.

 

1123 Private Francis Melbourne ZILLMAN, an 18 year old Fence contractor from Lisson Grove Wooloowin, Queensland. He enlisted on 15 April 1915; and subsequently Died of Wounds, 4 April 1918.

The Australian Light Horse Studies Centre is a not for profit and non profit group whose sole aim is to write the early history of the Australian Light Horse from 1900 - 1920. It is privately funded and the information is provided by the individuals within the group and while permission for the use of the material has been given for this site for these items by various donors, the residual and actual copyright for these items, should there be any, resides exclusively with the donors.
